The other night I had the opportunity to spend, possibly, my last night at the Spectrum with the family. We were able to attend one of the last Phantoms games before they start demolition in order to build Philly Live, a new entertainment complex adjacent to the stadiums. I’ve seen many concerts and games at the Spectrum over the years, but I still remember the first time. A classmate in grade school invited me down to see a Sixer’s game when Dr. J was still playing around 1979. That was a fun time and I can still see the court from our seats (we were pretty close).
More recently, it’s been a great way to take the family out for night to see some minor league hockey and not spend too much money. Saturday night was made more special as it was the one time I was in what the Spectrum called “boxes” with a group outing. We were able to the see the Phantoms win AND watch Villanova head to the Final Four at the same time.
The Spectrum wasn’t state of the art compared to the Wachovia Center, but it was always a good time there. It will be missed.
