Get rid of your dog

Sorry for the headline, but I had an incident over the weekend that I thought deserved a post. No, I’m not telling you to get rid of your dog. I love dogs. My sister’s dog, above, is one of my favorites. But as I said earlier, something happened over the weekend that bothered me.
While dogs have been present at the many homes I’ve viewed and showed, they’ve always been secluded either by a room, a kiddie gate or a cage.  Showings at homes with pets are usually requested in advance so the owner can take care of the animal before the scheduled time.  This weekend’s “small, friendly dog” turned out to be not so friendly.  Suffice it to say, we had to leave without really seeing the house because the dog was roaming loose and decided we shouldn’t be there.  I can only imagine how many other showings ended this way for this house.

As a seller, if you have a pet and you want people to see your house, please either remove it or seclude it, somehow, while potential buyers are going to be there.  It may be friendly while YOU are there, but it may react differently to strangers when you’re gone.  After all, if people can’t SEE your house, they’re not going to BUY your house.   The less obstacles you present to potential buyers, the better.

Pictures on a flier are nice…but we kinda wanna see the house too ya know…

Also, if you keep your dog inside the house, it’d be great if you do a check for any “hidden surprises.”
