As I’ve written in a prior post I’m an avid cyclist. I love rolling through Chester County on two wheels, as you can see so much more than you can in the steel cage on 4 wheels. My rides have taken me from the top to the bottom of the county, though not necessarily all in one day. Though I can’t really do this for work (I have enough problems pulling myself up a hill), it certainly saves my gas money as I’m not driving to a gym.
There are miles and miles of roads and trails to explore this way. Many of my rides go through or around Valley Forge Park. Once there, you can hop on the trail and go all the way to Philadelphia or head west towards Green Lane Park up in Montgomery County. Much of the trail is paved. For the most part I use the trail as a connection to other areas, as there are numerous places along the trail to get off and explore the area.
While I tend to ride by myself or a friend , now and then, I’ve also ridden with many of the great cycling clubs in the area. While not comprehensive, here’s a list of some of the clubs I’ve ridden with. For the most part, they all have organized rides throughout the year.
Most of the rides these clubs provide are not considered racing. Racing is something completely different and takes a LOT of training to participate. If you want to get a great feel for racing, next Saturday, July 5 will be the annual Iron Hill Twilight Criterium which is held in downtown West Chester. There’s something for everyone. My kids love participating in the children’s ride, where they get to “race” down the street and through the finish line at the Iron Hill Brewery while the crowds cheer them on. All the kids usually receive something for participating (like a new helmet) and have fun. There’s amateur events all afternoon, culminating in the main event that evening with the pros taking the streets. There’s a certain awe and thrill (for me) to see these guys flying by at 35 MPH wheel to wheel. You can feel the whoosh of air as they fly by. Many of the restaurants downtown have outdoor seating and provide great food and drink while watching the guys and gals fly by. If you’re looking for something to do for 4th of July weekend before the firework shows, be sure to check it out.
Also, just a quick reminder. Though we may be slower than you as go by in your car, we’re not trying to hold you up. Some of us could be your friend or neighbor just trying to get some exercise, so remember to “Share the Road” and use caution when passing. It may just be your favorite Realtor®.
